RTCA had the pleasure of meeting with many of our members and joining aviation stakeholders around the globe at prominent industry events in the 2nd quarter. We hope to meet many more of you this year!
Key themes included aviation’s current challenges relative to spectrum allocation, integration of Advanced Air Mobility into the airspace, use of artificial intelligence and machine learning in aviation, and hyper connected aircraft, among others.
ICNS
RTCA sponsored the 24th ICNS Conference in Washington D.C. and RTCA’s Senior Director of Standards and Technology, Rebecca Morrison, participated and met with RTCA special committee leaders during the event. Key topics focused on hyper-connected ATM, Advanced Air Mobility, Spectrum and Artificial Intelligence. An important outcome of the discussions was a call for participants to reach out to the ITU and educate them on the needs of aviation for safety spectrum.
AUVSI XPONENTIAL
RTCA’s Program Director Brandi Teel, met with members at XPONENTIAL and RTCA Board Chair, Mr. Lorne Cass, led a panel discussion on Industry Consensus Standards. The panelists from the FAA, AURA Networks and Wing discussed how industry consensus standards can support and complement FAA policy as they work to certify more complex Uncrewed Aircraft Systems operations in the U.S.
EUROCAE Symposium
RTCA’s President and CEO Carol Huegel lead a panel discussion at the EUROCAE Symposium in Lucerne where the theme was Towards Future Connectivity. The engaging discussion with Airbus, INDRA, Frequentis, EASA and Honeywell covered the challenges, advancements and opportunities presented by data link technology, and potential solutions supported by deployment of LDACS.
FAA/EASA International Aviation Safety Conference
RTCA was pleased to attend and sponsor this year’s Safety Conference. RTCA’s President and CEO Carol Huegel and Chief Operating Officer Brett Eastham attended the panel discussions whereby much was learned relative to future needs of RTCA members. Carol and Brett also enjoyed meeting with existing RTCA members. Key topics included the importance of international cooperation between the regulators, supporting ICAO and safety initiatives in 3rd world countries, data sharing and management as an increasingly important priority to improve safety as aviation embraces digital transformation, and the opportunity to gather data from current AAM operations to inform future regulatory and certification approaches. The need for standards to support the changing aviation landscape was clear, particularly to aid the successful implementation of vertiports, digitization, Artificial Intelligence, eVTOL vehicles, Human Factors and sustainability efforts.
RTCA leaders and members from the Board of Directors participated in many aviation events including the April and May Aero Club Luncheons which respectively featured the Honorable NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy and a session led by NBAA President Ed Bolen, focused on sustainability and Climbing Higher.
