Jun 7-8 – SC-213, Enhanced Flight Vision Systems and Synthetic Vision Systems (EFVS/SVS), met jointly with EUROCAE WG-79 at EUROCAE to work on updates to the new EFVS and SVS MASPS. They will meet again in the fall to initiate OC/FRAC. Working group meetings are continuing over the summer to complete the internal review of the new documents.
Jun 12-16 – SC-223, Internet Protocol Suite (IPS) and AeroMACS, met jointly with EUROCAE WG-108 hosted by Frequentis in Vienna, Austria. The group completed dispositioning OC/FRAC comments and will present the MASPS for IPS for Air Traffic Management to the EUROCAE Council and RTCA Program Management Committee in September for publication.
Jun 12-16 – SC-216, Aeronautical Information Systems Security, met in joint plenary with EUROCAE WG-72 at RTCA in Washington, DC. They continued work to revise two documents. One will include guidance on change impact analysis, and one will address performance requirements for event reporting. The group is also working on two new documents – one to address management system for information security and the other to address generation, storage, and delivery of data. All four documents are expected to be published in 2024.
Jun 15-16 – SC-238, Counter UAS Systems, met in joint plenary with EUROCAE WG-115 at EUROCONTROL in Brussels, Belgium. They continued to work on an initial SPR document for non-cooperative surveillance systems for detection of UAS. The group also discussed Terms of Reference (ToR) changes to combine their SPR and INTEROP documents.
Jun 22 – Program Management Committee (PMC) met at RTCA in Washington, DC. The group reviewed and approved one new document (for lost command and control link UAS behavior) and two revised documents (one for collision avoidance systems and one for airborne weather radar systems) for publication, accepted one white paper on possible turbulence standard, approved one administrative change for one Special Committee (SC) ToR, five ToR revisions, received updates on important SC activities, and discussed several significant topics.
Jun 23 – SC-240, Topics on Software Advancement, met jointly with EUORCAE WG-117 at RTCA to review and disposition comments on the COTS/Open-Source Software supplement. They hope to initiate OC/FRAC before the end of 2023. In addition, the group is adding the scope for the Forum for Aeronautical Software to their ToR.
Jun 26 and 30 – SC-206, Aeronautical Information (AIS) and Meteorological (MET) Data Link Services, met in joint plenary with EUROCAE WG-76 at Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association in Frederick, MD. They continued work on DO-364A/ED-XXX to add newly defined AIS and MET service descriptions and discussed plans to kick off work on a new turbulence standard. NOTE: See Call for Participation below.
Jun 29 – SC-235, Non-Rechargeable Lithium Batteries, met virtually to discuss releasing DO-227B for a second Final Review and Comment (FRAC) period and a possible ToR revision. This document revision addresses the continuing changes in technology and differing opinions with respect to lithium batteries. As there remains a few open comments from the first FRAC, the group could not release for the proposed second FRAC. A follow-up Plenary will be scheduled for August.
Jun 30 – SC-214, Standards for Air Traffic Data Communication Services, met in joint Plenary with EUROCAE WG-92 and the AEEC Data Link (DLK) Systems Subcommittee at EUROCAE Headquarters in Paris, France. The groups discussed a resolution to VDL Mode 2 radio receiver interference, a resolution to FAA Data Comm and European DLS operational issues, and continued work on revisions to the VDL Mode 2 and DLK standards.
Jun 30 – SC-217, Aeronautical Databases, met in joint plenary with WG-44 at RTCA to continue working the proposed updates to DO-200C, Standards for Processing Aeronautical Data, which will enter OC/FRAC this fall.
CALL FOR PARTICIPATION:
The RTCA Program Management Committee (PMC) and the EUROCAE Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) has approved a new activity for Special Committee 206 and Working Group 76: the development of a ‘Minimum Aviation Systems Performance Standard (MASPS) for Automated Atmospheric Turbulence Derivation Techniques’.
This Call for Participation shall notify interested organizations and experts about this new deliverable and invite them to submit their interest in participation in this effort.
In particular, we are looking for experts in the following areas:
- Aviation weather forecasting
- Developers of methods to detect turbulence on board aircraft in flight
- Understanding of atmospheric turbulence and effects on aircraft
- Airline flight crews, dispatchers, meteorologists, and operations personnel
- Air traffic controllers and those with understanding of turbulence impact on air traffic management
- Airframe and avionics manufacturers
- Data link communications experts
- Regulators
The Kick-Off of the activity is scheduled from 11 to 15 September 2023. The group will meet at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) located in Boulder, Colorado. More detailed information will be made available.
